Statue of Jesus The Redeemer
Other than its gorgeous marine parks that frequently referred as the paradise for scuba divers, North Sulawesi also holds a reputation for its unique and profound culture that has attracted a lot of tourists. I am mostly intrigued by the later (read: i couldn’t dive). and to had a chance to explore its global destination and study the culture and the history of this place I am delighted.
There are at least five colossal statue of Jesus in Sulawesi Island. Four of which is located in North Sulawesi. In 2020, I had a chance to visit one of them.

It is Statue of Jesus The Redeemer (Patung Yesus Penebus) located in the southern part of Lembeh Island, Bitung, North Sulawesi. The structure stands 25,5 meters high (excluding its 6 meter pedestal) facing Malucca Sea. The arms stretch 25 meter wide open as a symbol of Jesus blessing the people of Bitung and Lembeh Island.
The statue itself was created by Javanese sculptor living in Bitung, Hendra Susanto. The design of the statue is heavily inspired by the famous Cristo Redentor statue in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

During my time in there, I didn’t find a lot of visitors. Just one or two people stopped by to take a quick picture then left the place. It is true that that’s the only activity you can do there. Though the view from the top is quite impressive. You can see beautiful beaches and coconut trees across the hill.
